STOW, Ohio -- MACtac® Printing Products expands BS 5609:1986 Section 3 certifications for MACtac FCD6914 polyester label stock and VDG6911 vinyl label stock to print with a variety of ITW Thermal Films PrintheadSaver® thermal transfer ribbons.
Expanding to include two label stocks printed with three different ITW Thermal Films ribbons, it certifies MACtac FCD6914 polyester label printed with ITW B324 Durable Extreme Series Resin ribbon, MACtac FCD6914 polyester label printed with ITW B325 Flexible Extreme Series Resin ribbon and MACtac VDG6911 vinyl label printed with ITW B128 Durable Extreme Series Midrange wax/resin ribbon.
"BS 5609 is an internationally recognized standard covering the suitability for the labeling of goods for marine shipment," said Kim Hensley, product manager, MACtac Printing Products. "Label durability is a must for marine and extreme environments, and MACtac continues to develop products to meet the latest industry regulations."
BS 5609 is a specification for printed pressure-sensitive, adhesive-coated labels for marine use, including requirements for label base material. BS 5609 comprises four parts, of which there are two key sections – Section 2 and 3. Section 2 details the tests to be carried out on the base label material and Section 3 on the printed label. Base labels must meet the requirements of Section 2 in order to meet the print methods in Section 3. Tests of the print method set out various durability criteria including adhesive performance, print performance and abrasion resistance, stipulating minimum standards for labels to be used in marine environments.

BS 5609 is widely referred to when specifying an extremely durable label. Compliance is a
requirement for self-adhesive drum labels needing certification with merchant shipping
regulations, international maritime dangerous goods (IMDG) and globally harmonized system of
classification (GHS) standards.
FCD6914 is a 2-mil gloss top coated, white polyester and VDG6911 is a 3.4-mil top coated, white
flexible PVC. Both feature a durable and aggressive permanent acrylic adhesive and a 3.2 supercalendared
kraft liner. Applications include chemical drum labels, drums and containers used to
transport petroleum, paint and liquid or powder chemicals designed to hold up under extreme
conditions. FCD6914 and VDG6911 are typically used for content identification, warning and
instructional labeling.
ITW Thermal Films B128 wax/resin ribbon is UV resistant and offers strong abrasion and
environmental resistance. The B325 resin ribbon provides good resistance to chemicals and is
used in demanding industrial applications that require high durability. The B324 resin ribbon is a
UL-recognized, multi-purpose ribbon that is halogen-free and features high durability and
chemical resistance. All ITW Thermal Films PrintheadSaver thermal transfer ribbons feature
advanced technologies such as an anti-static coating and high-sensitivity inks that maintain and
sustain the life of printheads, use less energy and print at faster speeds.
