WHAT YOU WILL TAKE AWAY FROM THIS COURSE:
Having a patent on a product generates sustainability for that business. To successfully develop a product that does not infringe on another’s patent and may itself be patentable, a developer must have a working knowledge of how to read patent claims.

    You will learn:
    1. How is a patent structured the way that it is and why?
    2. Basic concepts of novelty and obviousness.
    3. How to read a patent claim and understand its boundaries.
    4. How a product development can foresee whether the result is likely to be patentable.
    5. How should a claim be "read onto" a product, or onto another claim.
This course is focusing on US Patents. It may also be useful to understand patents from other juridictions (e.g. Europe) having similar format.

Early Registrants: Submit your specific needs when registering and let Laurence Pearson help you find appropriate solutions.

The following sections will be covered during this session:

    1. The statutory basis for patents.
    2. The basics of patents – what they comprise and why.
    3. The structure of claims – preamble, transition and body.
    4. How to assess novelty when reading a patent claim.
    5. Obviousness, KSR v. Telefex and its effect on the patentability discussion.
    6. The basics of reading multiple patents and mapping patents onto each other and to products.
At the end of the training there will be a Q&A Session where you can pose questions to Laurence Pearson. A transcript of all the questions and answers will be made available after the event.
