This article will review the value propositions provided by these products over more conventional technologies. Emphasis will be on demanding applications in the transportation area. Specification for various types of pressure sensitive graphic films is provided, and several examples of challenging applications (e.g., vehicle and aircraft appliqués) are discussed. Pressure sensitive adhesives based on acrylic polymers have been the choice for manufacturing self-adhesive films that are used in the graphic arts industry. These films have advanced to such an extent that they are being employed as alternatives for direct painting and image spraying. The major applications are in the transportation industry and include appliqués for aircraft, paint replacement tape for automobiles, and decorative advertisements for the exterior of buses, trucks, commercial flooring, and so forth.
