Typical applications for PSAs in the health care industry include wound coverings and closures, surgical drapes, ostomy mounts, electrocardiograph electrode mounts, electrosurgical grounding pads, and transdermal drug delivery.Medical adhesives must also often be capable of going through repeated sterilization cycles (i.e., steam autoclave, dry heat, radiation, ethylene oxide).
Adhesives used in medical devices are often tested for their effect on cells (cytotoxicity), blood constituents (hemolysis), adjacent tissues, and for overall systemic effect. Several classes of biocompatibility testing exist.
