NVH Damping Promises More Than a Smooth Ride

On the basis of noise alone, I'd far rather take a ride in a modern car than one fifteen or twenty years old. That's in part because especially efficient noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) damping materials are available today to automobile producers. Their damping exploits viscoelastic materials like pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), to dissipate vibrational energy as heat. This has been used in military aircraft and spacecraft since the 1960s. But today, as well as the automotive industry, they're attracting interest in products as diverse as computers, tools and even sports equipment. With user comfort seemingly under control, it seems the differentiator between different NVH materials is the benefits they provide manufacturers.

	May, 2012 - Biocomposite Washout Offers Industry Awareness Lesson They are based on a 3000-year old idea, and in 2010, the worldwide market for natural fiber composites reached $2.1 billion, having more than doubled since 2005, analysts have said. That market is set to grow by 10 per cent annually through to 2016, as petroleum based plastic prices rise and governments support eco-friendly products. These biocomposites' most important end industries are the massive construction and automotive markets, while electronics and sporting goods are increasingly adopting them. But in the recent Omnexus4Adhesives Click'N'Vote poll asking what their key end benefit is, just five people voted. That's disappointing, clearly, but the surprisingly low engagement with biocomposites holds lessons for the entire industry.

	April, 2012 - Innovation Boosts UV PSAs An adhesive that cures at the flick of a switch might seem like it would easily outcompete other formulations. But UV-cure adhesives have also had drawbacks compared with the hot-melts and aqueous dispersions that they compete with to replace solvent coating in manufacturing PSA products. While UV-curable adhesives undoubtedly cure rapidly, they have also been comparatively expensive, and require extra investment in the lamps used to cure them and also bring extra safety concerns. Though these issues have provided a barrier to adoption by manufacturers, many still find UV curing PSA technology useful

If you've ever tried it, you'll know that bonding polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), or other low surface energy substrates can be a real problem. But, thanks largely to thermoplastic olefins' low cost and excellent durability, flexibility, and resistance to heat, moisture, and solvents, it's becoming ever more common to make products from low surface energy materials.

Adhesives provide a lightweight method for bonding surfaces, and as such holds much promise in the automotive industry, either on its own or in hybrid attachment approaches like weldbonding. But do automotive engineers think primarily about what their bonding solution does to their products' CO₂ emissions?
